Why do I want to study abroad?
Advika Gupta, Vasant Valley School, New Delhi
Winner, Lufthansa Write to Win 2012 Contest |
I spun around the meadow. Red. Orange. Green. Yellow. Blue. Purple. Pink. White. That?s what all those colors from the flowers merged into. White. I felt the grass beneath my feet. It tickled. I felt the corners of my mouth turning up. I wanted to see the green blades closer.

London Through The Eyes Of An Outsider
|
By Victor Mario Kaisar, Fanshawe College
Winner, Lufthansa Student Writer 2012 Contest |
Whenever I mentioned to my friends that I was going to Canada for college there were mixed emotions that came through: some happy, some sad, some couldn?t care less. When I replied ?London? when asked which part of Canada, 99% were stumped.

| Importance of I-94 |
| By Shabaz Ahmed, Texas A&M University - Kingsville |
|
Hello fellow students, when you enter U.S. as a non-immigrant, the immigration inspector examines your passport and visa then gives you a small white card known as I-94 (Arrival/Departure record). On the I-94, the inspector writes either a date or "D/S" (duration of status). If you are a student, "duration of status" means that you may remain in the U.S. as long as you are enrolled full-time and your I-20 (F-1) or DS 2019 (J-1) has not expired.

| Your identification: Your ID |
| By Tuhina Seth, University of Ottawa |
|
Your identification: Your ID. To everyone who is in a different country to study - whether undergraduate or graduate or even post graduate - get an identification ID. This simply means a piece of document which you can show as proof. Leave out the passport as one cannot carry the Indian passport all the time.

Hello Students, Whether you?re at a university in Canada or US or even UK, it doesn?t make much difference except that, for sure, you?re away from your homeland India. | By Tuhina Seth, University of Ottawa |
|
Students, So you have decided to go abroad to study and leave all the things in India behind. It?s a well thought plan but have you ever wondered how are you going to survive there? The better way out than living alone, with no help at a rented apartment, is living with a host family ? a ?homestay?.

| Never give up |
| By Mahendra, University of Bonn |
|
I come from a normal middle-class family in India. I took a student loan from a bank to study abroad. I struggled to study in the beginning as the course was very difficult. It was getting worse every day as I tried to catch up with my studies and not to think about my financial situation. I did not try to work part time as I wanted to focus all my efforts on my studies. Being in a foreign country without family and friends was a psychological weakness as well. At times, I have cried hopelessly, not knowing what to do, fell sick.

| If you were a vegetarian flying with Lufthansa |
| By Srivats Shukla, Virginia Tech |
|
I remember my first flight to Washington DC ? first one with Lufthansa,on 16th August, 2010! So it?s 1 AM and we are going through a second security check at IGI Airport, New Delhi after customs and immigration (God knows why ? probably Lufthansa?s way of celebrating Indian Independence Day). People are bored, old women are half asleep (they want a peaceful sleep to start their journey), there are some fathers running after their kids to get them out of security (their moms are lost) and the kids are still enjoying as if it?s nothing serious.

| The first couple of months |
| By Suyog HC, Indiana University, Bloomington |
|
This being my first trip abroad, I was told to prepare to have my world shook by an alien culture out there to get me. And I was also supposed to look forward to being blown away by the things to see and do in the Land of the Free. I'm not sure if it's been that dramatic, but the past couple of months have been filled with many surprises and a lot of learning.

| "Mug"less in Manhattan |
| By Aasimah Navlakhi, Syracuse University |
|
Remember those days when you had your own room, with the attached bath that your maid would clean out every day? The evening snacks (almost always deep-fried and spicy) that your mom had waiting for you when you got back from school? The way your towel would disappear from your bathroom floor and magically reappear in your closet, well-pressed and smelling great? Forget about all that.

| Bridges burned, lessons learned |
| By Natasha Travasso, University of Toronto |
|
It?s funny how they say blood is thicker than water. Some days I?d rather us be meaningless raindrops submerged in a pool with no ways of separation. All just in the same pool of water lost with no reason, attachment or purpose. But, blood never separates. It always has a story. An identity. A purpose.

| Remember what you come for ? success will follow |
| By Vinit Shende, University of Sunderland |

Studying abroad in any country is an intense decision made by a student. This crucial step can convert student life into a professional and decisive one. Students overseas are quite independent and self reliant in making their own decisions. They gain an ability to move ahead and live with confidence in this competitive world.

| Networking & self-marketing |
| By Japan Shah, University of Texas |
|
The first thing I learned after coming to University in 2010 was networking. What is networking? Networking is simply making your network through public meetings, seminars, guest lectures, social events, information sessions and business conferences. How does this help? In university, it helps you to develop useful contacts. You get an opportunity to know more about the people you meet, share knowledge and experience.

A few days back I wanted to get some of stuff from the local grocery shop. After I was done with picking up all the items that I needed, I was at the counter to pay. First, I pulled out one of the debit-cards and tried to pay the bill with it, but I entered the wrong PIN.

Why do I want to study abroad?

?Will the Taj Mahal collapse within five years?? This horrible headline stared me in the eyes from the front page of the newspaper many months ago. The Taj may not be pivotal to my life; it does not affect my daily life; yet, as an Indian, I was truly appalled, not just to imagine such beauty vanishing, but also to read about the reasons for such waste.
